This week Pavs 1st xv welcomed an improving Lutterworth RFC to Burntstump.  Both sides having lost only once since Christmas, this was a much anticipated fixture. On a warm afternoon, perfect for running rugby, it was Lutterworth who made the early running. The away side came out of the blocks with a clear sense of purpose and scored three quick tries in the first twenty minutes to take a 17-0 lead. Pavs looked uncharacteristically short of inspiration, but were able to bring themselves back into the game with a converted Doug Billam try at 17-7. Unfortunately, this did not stop the Lutterworth flow and eight more points followed to give them a half time lead at 25-7.

Following the break, Pavs were still not able to resurrect the form that had seen them challenge for promotion all season. Two more Lutterworth tries followed to extend the lead to 37-7 on fifty minutes. Finally, Pavs began to spark into life. Phil Egglesaw touched down after a series of plays and a powerful drive and Christian Murphy kept up his try a game record to bring the score to 37-19. With Pavs running everything, Lutterworth snaffled another for a lead of 44-19. Pavs then added two more tries in the closing minutes with Doug Billam finishing with a hat trick. Final 44-33 in favour of Lutterworth.

Simply one of those days when Pavs could do right for doing wrong. An expansive second half comeback came too late to affect matters, following an out of character misfiring first. Pavs now have three league games left, followed by a promotion play-off and two cup finals (Nottinghamshire Cup and NLD Cup) The much used reset will now undoubtedly be pressed and Pavs build to next Saturday’s away league fixture at Melton Mowbray RFC.
