York RUFC

44 - 19

(HT 34-5)

Paviors RFC

This weekend Pavs travelled up the A1 to play York in the latest round of the Regional One North East competition.

On an afternoon that just hinted at the warm months to come and on a soft but super surface for rugby, the game began in spirited fashion. After an early period of Pavs possession, it was York who opened the scoring with a try between the posts to give them a 7-0 lead. Pavs then really began to find their feet. For the next 15 minutes they dominated possession with a number of slick well orchestrated attacks. From a penalty lineout, the pack drove over with Aaron Langan coming up with ball, so game on at 7-5. York then further extended their lead when the official strangely reversed a penalty awarded to Pavs right in front of the posts and give the home side a 10-5 lead. This seemed to knock a little stuffing out of Pavs and it was York who dominated the rest of the half, scoring three tries and a penalty to give them at 34-5 half time lead.

After the break, Pavs came out in a much more feisty and competitive mood. Early pressure told when from yet another penalty and kick into the corner, a well worked lineout led to young prop Jake Baldry diving over. Fly half George Billam added the conversion to bring the score to 34-12. Pavs continued to push for another try with a repeat affair and score by Steve Allen to bring the score 34-19 with 20 minutes to go. Pavs battled away for at least a bonus point, but unfortunately attracted the wrath of the referee on a number of occasions. As the game began to develop a very competitive edge, players from both sides found themselves in the bin. As it turned out Pavs went into the last ten minutes with just 13 players. York took every advantage of this, scoring 2 tries to give them an unassailable 44-19 victory.

The fact that Pavs had only played one game in 8 weeks, due to inclement weather, clearly had an effect on the early tacking and team confidence. During significant periods of the game Pavs played with fluent style and plenty of vim and vigour. Having shaken off the cobwebs this week, it is to be hoped that they will be in fine fettle for yet another away game at Ilkley RFC next weekend. Onwards………!
