This weekend Pavs travelled over to West Bridgford in Round 7 of The Regional North East One competition. This continues to be a hotly contested affair and Saturday’s fixture was no different.
Pavs made their best start of the season, scoring three tries via Ben Taylor, Kieran Wells and Alex Rimmington in the opening half hour to take a 19-0 lead. At this point, three clearance kicks had huge ramifications for the game as a whole. Two were run back in to score, this in itself bringing Bridgford back in contention at 19-14. Then on thirty six minutes pacey full back Matt Molyneux challenged for the ball in the air with his opposite number. In the resulting contact neither played was hurt, but the official appeared to be swayed by the vocal crowd and sin binned Molyneux for some reason. This gave Bridgford further impetus who then went into the lead at 22-19 on the final play.
Pavs again started the second half brightly with fourteen players. The away side made numerous forays to the Bridgford line, but failed to cross it. As time passed there were always opportunities for the home side to break out. Unfortunately on sixty minutes with the game heating up nicely, the official then compounded his questionable judgement of the first half by awarding the hapless Molyneux another card which caused him to be sent from the field. In the resulting play Bridgford extended their lead to 28-19 with twenty minutes to play. Pavs fourteen battled and were rewarded with a further try via Kieran Wells and with the Billam extras narrow the lead to 28-26 to Bridgford which was how the game concluded.
Pavs were justifiably aggrieved at losing a player at such a crucial period of the game. They will look back on the missed opportunities and erratic kick chase that cost them dear with disappointment, but will be back refreshed and reset next Saturday to take on York RFC at The Stump. Onwards …..
