The day we’ve all been waiting for finally arrived! A mix of excitement and nerves filled the changing room (along with some questionable party music!) as our newly-formed Paviors Women’s team ‘The Pumas’ took the field for their first match. After seasons of preparation and hard work, the team was ready to make history.
Following the disappointment of last week’s game being cancelled, our local neighbours Mellish stepped in, offering a friendly development game to give us our first shot at competitive rugby. We couldn’t have asked for better opposition – Mellish brought a strong side and played with great intensity, whilst offering positive support to our newer players throughout the game.
Mellish, a well-established and experienced side playing two leagues above us, came out strong right from the start. After receiving the opening kick-off from Harriet Bentley, they capitalized on a loose ball in the contact area, driving it forward with a well-placed kick to our 22. Although Paviors reacted swiftly in defence, Mellish were quick to exploit gaps in our breakdown, securing an early lead.
But Paviors weren't going to back down! The team showed incredible resilience, quickly countering and making their way down the pitch. Millie Briggs made a fantastic effort to score, but the try was unfortunately disallowed. The battle continued, and while Mellish added another try, Paviors fought back hard. The highlight of the day came when Fran Taylor bulldozed her way over the line for our first ever Paviors Women’s try! The roar from the balcony was electric, rivalling any cup final atmosphere.
Despite the relentless rain, which teased us all morning before finally letting loose during the game, the Paviors ladies showed unwavering grit and determination. As the game progressed, Mellish managed two more tries, but not without some incredible defensive efforts from our team. Special mention goes to Hollie Joyce, making her rugby debut and delivering several try-saving tackles that kept us in the fight.
The game was split into four quarters, and every moment was a showcase of the hard work, passion, and teamwork that has gone into building this side. Our starting lineup was a fantastic mix of Paviors talent, including the new core players of Gina Cross, Becky Wisdom, Sharon Vickers, Tina Evans(Captain), Jen Neave, Jen Moon, Hollie Joyce, and Janine Coates.
A special shoutout to our U18s, making their senior debuts: Emily Ellis, Ellie Cross, Frankie Hillsley, Marie-Anne (Maz) Hayes and Millie Briggs – you shone and showed maturity beyond your years. Also, it was amazing to see our returners: Harriet Bentley (Vice Captain), Fran Taylor (our try-scorer!), Catherine Burke, and Charlene Briggs back in action.
It was a tough game, but we walk away proud. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey for Paviors Women’s Rugby. 💪
Final score: Mellish 5 tries – Paviors 1 try
Forward of the match: Millie Briggs (8)
Back of the match: Hollie Joyce (15)
Mellish nomination for Paviors player of the match: Catherine Burke (12)
Onwards and upwards Pumas! Let’s keep building! #PaviorsWomen #RugbyFamily #FirstGame
