Lichfield 34 Paviors 14
This weekend Pavs travelled over to Lichfield RFC in Round 10 of the Midlands Regional 2 competition. Last season’s game saw both sides take convincing victories at home, so it was sure to be an entertaining afternoon. Pavs continued their focus on youth with former academy youngsters Ollie Anderson, Noah Bhatia, Archie Hall, Eddie Holmes and Jacob Playford all being given opportunities to impress.
From the kick off both sides enjoyed good periods of possession. On fourteen minutes, Lichfield capitalised on a Pavs error to take the lead at 5-0. A second try followed in the same manner on twenty two minutes with the intervening period being a balanced affair with both sides attacking when the opportunity arose. Unfortunately for Pavs a third try was scored by Lichfield to give them a lead of 17-0 on thirty six minutes. Running into half time, Pavs began to be able to turn some of their pressure into points and from a series of plays in front of the Lichfield posts, the impressive Richard Hutchinson drove over for his second try in two games. George Billam added the extras to take the score to 17-7 at the break.
After the half time rest, Pavs made a bright and energetic start, but annoyingly conceded another well worked try
to find themselves 22-7 down with forty nine minutes on the clock. Pavs then had another bright period, before again conceding on sixty five minutes to go further behind at 29-7. Prop Jake Baldry took a break and Archie Hall amply filled his shoes for the remainder of the game. Moments later Ollie Anderson and Jacob Playford entered the fray as Pavs emptied their bench. Pavs again found field position and attacked the Lichfield line with scrum half Ben Taylor executing a fine “quarter back sneak” to score and with Billam extras bring the score to 29-14. Lichfield scored on the last play which was rather disappointing, so final score was 34-14.
A somewhat strange afternoon, where Pavs played some good stuff in patches. In fact, at times it looked like a game between two well matched sides. Lichfield pounced on any Pavs errors to counter attack effectively which was perhaps the only difference between the two sides.
