Paviors RFC

43 - 22

(HT 0-0)

Matlock RUFC

This weekend Pavs welcomed Matlock RFC to The Stump in round 7 of the Regional 2 Midlands North competition. Last year’s games saw the spoils shared with both sides winning by the odd point, strangely, away from home, so game on for both squads.

Three minutes in, returning skipper Doug Billam went over with brother George Billam on hand to add the extras and give Pavs a 7-0 lead. From the restart Pavs were rather guilty of over playing, resulting in a penalty to Matlock which brought the score to 7-3 on four minutes. Tom Gladwin fought his way over on nine minutes to advance Pavs lead to 12-3. In perfect tit for tat mode Matlock again struck back to narrow the lead to 12-10 with fourteen minutes on the clock. Predictably, Doug Billam added another try two minutes again with George on hand to add more extras which took Pavs 19-10 in front on sixteen minutes. Lo and behold Matlock hit back with again with Pavs failing to clear their lines from the restart, so 19-15 on twenty one minutes. Ten minutes later new signing Richard Hutchinson squeezed over for his debut try to again extend Pavs lead to 26-15 with the Billam G extras. Unbelievably, Matlock again gathered the ball from the restart and touched down to again bring them in touch at 26-22, before sprightly hooker Owen Taylor finished off a sweeping movement to score and give a half time lead of 33-22 with more Billam G extras.

After the break, Pavs seemed to tighten matters up and focus their energies in front of some very vocal support for the supporters. On fifty five minutes, Rich Hutchinson was sent for a ten minute rest by the official and minutes later Phil Eggleshaw bumped and bored his way over to finally put Pavs well in front at 38-22. On sixth five minutes Matt Molyneux and Jake Baldry departed whilst Pavs introduced a returned Ollie Hanson and promising youngster  Archie Hall. Minutes later Jonty Green replaced Ben Taylor as Pavs emptied their bench and brought fresh legs to the fray. On sixty six minutes wing Tom Davies sprinted in to complete Pavs scoring at 43-22.

After a somewhat slow start to the season Pavs are now beginning to get their collective act together. The best second half so far saw Pavs keep Matlock at bay with energetic defence upfront and the backs revealing their undoubted talent. The test will be taking this form away to Tamworth RFC next weekend and beyond.
