This Saturday Pavs welcomed local rivals West Bridgford to The Stump in round 4 of the current
Regional 2 Midlands North competition. Last season’s games were close affairs with both sides winning their home fixtures, so an expectant crowd gathered in anticipation of another entertaining afternoon.
Following the kick off WB came out of the traps with a good deal of vim and vigour. Pavs weathered the early storm before working themselves into the opposition half and took the lead with a George Billam penalty. On twenty minutes, an unlucky bounce saw WB open their account with a well taken try and conversion at 7-3. Three minutes later, wing Tom Davies finished of a fine move to go in under the sticks and with the Billam conversion hand Pavs back the lead at 10-7. On twenty six and thirty three minutes Pavs then unfortunately conceded two tries to go behind at 19–10 despite a lot of good defensive work. As the half drew to a close George Billam found enough space to touch down and convert his own try to draw things close at 19-17.
Following the break George Kumra replaced an injured Tom Davies and Pavs moved into the lead at 24-19 with a well taken Morgan Jones try. The turning point in the game came on fifty seven minutes and the four minutes thereafter when Pavs inexplicably and frustratingly conceded three quick fire tries to go a good way behind 38-24. Kaine Johnson replaced Josh Hall on sixty three minutes before Tom Gladwin galloped in from a distance to bring Pavs back in contention at 38-29. On seventy minutes Pavs again conceded a well worked score to bring the score to 45-29. Dan Hodges then replaced Jake Baldry on the front row. On seventy four minutes Josh Hall returned as youngster Jacob Playford departed and Josh Flanagan finished the scoring at 45-36.
So an entertaining game that seemed to swing back and forth and was more reflective of Level 5 where both teams have recently resided. Pavs are not a million miles away from being one of the top performers in the league and have scored 134 points in just four games, the key will be to overcome certain inconsistent defensive frailties that seem to come and go in any given game. Next weekend, Pavs have a rest weekend before travelling to Dronfield RFC in another highly competitive looking fixture. Onwards…….!
