This weekend Pavs made the short trip over Ilkeston RFC; a trip they have not made for about seven years. Traditionally, this was always a hard fought battle with the honours for the season often being shared, so it was always going to be a highly competitive affair.
On an initially warm and sunny afternoon, Pavs started down slope and receiving the ball. The kick off was well gathered and moved into midfield only to be snaffled by the Ilkeston centre who ran it back under the posts, so Pavs found themselves 7-0 in one minute. Three minutes later full back Dan Flint finished off a fine move and with the George Billam level the score at 7-7. The home side again struck back to go in front again at 14-7 with seven minutes on the clock. Two fine tries followed on fourteen and twenty one minutes with messrs Phil Eggleshaw and Will Taylor doing the honours and Billam adding the extras to give back the lead at 21-14. With Pavs very much on the front foot, Sam Bradley crossed the line for his first 1st XV try to extend Pavs lead to 26-14 on twenty nine minutes, Ilkeston again broke free to narrow things up at 26-21 on thirty two minutes. Tom Gladwin then finished off the first half scoring with Pavs seemingly well in front at 33-21.
As the second half opened up with Pavs defending the slope and a louring sky prophetically looming over proceedings, matters seemed turn awry. Danny Green departed to the bin for a very innocuous looking tackle, this seeming to galvanise Ilkeston into action with them narrowing the lead on fifty three minutes to 33-28. Pavs then lost both centres, Morgan Jones and Will Taylor to injury in quick succession. This brought Dan Mangham and Ben Taylor into the fray, as Pavs tried to re-organise things in the back line. This seemed to set the seal on matters as ever increasing Ilkeston confidence brought them three tries on sixty eight, seventy one and seventy nine minutes to give them the win at 45-33.
Pavs dominated the first half down the slope but ran out of energy and players as the second half wore on and the constant re-organisation took its toll. Pavs will take this on the chin and regroup during the week and prepare for the visit of West Bridgford RFC next weekend at The Stump. 3.00pm kick off.
